RM of Loon Lake’s story
The Rural Municipality of Loon Lake No. 561 incorporated as a rural municipality on January 1, 1978. It lies in the province's northwest, and its council and administrator work out of an office in the village of Loon Lake.
Two villages, Loon Lake and Makwa, are surrounded by the RM. It also takes in the organized hamlet of Little Fishing Lake and a scattering of localities, among them Barthel, Flat Valley, Golden Ridge, Horse Head, Morin Creek, Mudie Lake, Murphy Lake, Peck Lake, Peerless and Whelan.
Visitors come for the outdoors and local history. Steele Narrows Provincial Park, Bronson Forest Provincial Recreation Site and Fowler Lake Recreation Site are all within the municipality, and the Big Bear Trail Museum is there too.
